![]() “I don’t think a lot of people know which restaurants are open,” said Council Rock’s Becky Davidson. Many others, including Mel’s, Brooks, Council Rock Brewery and The Otesaga’s Hawkeye Grill have quickly adapted to take-out and delivery. Some, like Morey’s and The Depot in Oneonta, the Doubleday Café in Cooperstown and Jackie’s in Milford, simply closed. “It was like someone took something out of my heart.” “When the quarantines started happening last week, I walked into work and there were no customers coming in,” said Brian Wrubleski, who owns Mel’s at 22, Cooperstown. With Governor Cuomo’s order that all “non-essential” businesses be shuttered, restaurants can no longer accommodate dine-in customers. Council Rock Brewery’s Kyle Llewellyn fills a “crowler” can – that’s half a growler – as Manager Becky Davidson supervises. “We’re going to add additional phone lines,” said owner Ryan Brooks. ![]() Special to ONEONTA – At Brooks House of BBQ, the staff can’t answer the phones fast enough. In my opinion, there's not a better place in town to spend my money on food. You’ll Have It TO GO! From Emergency, Novelty: Folks Around County Pick Up Dinners Mel’s at 22 proprietor Brian Wrubleski packs to-go dinners with the help of daughter Alex Gauther, left, and Tomeka Ray. What IS special about the Undercover Eggplant is the food and THAT is what I'm paying for. There's nothing extra special about the building or the decor. The decor, which some folks have mentioned, it's painted in eggplant colors outside (You CAN'T miss it: eggplant purple walls with bright green trim) looks like any normal deli inside. It's always good stuff though, nothing offensive. Sometimes it's blues or jazz, sometimes it's pop. Delightfully satisfying! (Honorable mention: Any of the cheesecakes!) One suggestion: If you're in a hurry and you're ordering more than just soup, call ahead so your food is ready when you get there. YUMMY! Favorite dessert: Bread pudding! Made with the bread they make at the deli, whipped cream on top. Note: The soup comes with a couple slices of the fabulous bread they make. If you're not sure what you might like, they're always willing to give you a little sample. I've only disliked two of the probably 20+ soups that I've tried. Almost any of the soups, which change daily. You HAVE to try the Creamy Garlic Eggplant pizza! (I wasn't a big eggplant fan, until I had this pizza!) It's got batter dipped eggplant atop a creamy garlic sauce and cheese, then dalloped with a little tomato pizza sauce, also made on the premises. My favorites? The Louisianna Locksmith sandwich: Thin slices of hot, batter dipped eggplant, cold thinly sliced ham, provolone cheese and all the fixings (lettuce, onion, tomato, etc.) on some of the best bread, which is baked fresh right there at the deli. ![]() The portions are huge, the prices are good, especially considering what you're getting. This deli has the BEST sandwiches, pizza, soup, salads and desserts! First and foremost, everything is quality food, very well prepared. WHY had I never heard of this place before? not a dining experience, rather, good food to go. the biggest dining loss in Oneonta history. THEN IT HAPPENED: the restaurant burned down. The restaurant is in a part of town that I do not frequent, but I intended to go out of my way to get there. My meal was very inexpensive, DELICIOUS, and I was definitely going to return OFTEN. I went reluctantly, and once again, was absolutely delighted. She has vegetarian tastes (which means SAWDUST is a food group). ![]() Why bother? A friend assured me that I would enjoy the Undercover Eggplant. That said, I don't venture out to explore new establishments that often. Oneonta notoriously has the worst food this side of the Mississippi. I know restaurants and am not a picky eater. I have been to restaurants all over NYC, SF, LA, Paris, Amsterdamn, on and on. Well, I have good news and I have bad news. ![]()
